THE APOLLO II ASTRONAUTS PROVIDE “INSURANCE” FOR THEIR FAMILIES IN CASE OF DISASTER
An Apollo 11 ‘Type 1’ insurance cover with a color cachet of the moon landing, 6.5 x 3.5, signed in blue felt tip by all three crew members: Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin.
The Apollo astronauts were not able to obtain insurance due to the extreme danger of space travel, so they came up with an ingenious fix. They had covers printed and signed them prior to the mission. In the event of disaster during the mission, they would all presumably be killed and, in their death, these covers would become collectible and in demand. Thus, their surviving families could sell the covers and receive the equivalent of insurance proceeds. Fortunately, there was no disaster, but these “insurance covers” signed by the crew are still extremely rare and valuable. These famous insurance covers, produced in order to provide financial security for astronauts families in case of disaster, have earned near legendary status as the ultimate space related philatelic item and one of the most sought after formats for astronaut autographs.
