Floridly SIGNED with an ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION by Salvador Dali in blue ink on the spread encompassing the first two blank pages (verso of ffep & recto of first blank). Full vintage signature, with the huge “D” in Dali and an intricate and iconic drawing of a knight with shield and spear along with a shooting star over a mother and child casting a shadow against the horizon. Boldly signed with his surname only, Dali has added the date “1966” below. The signature is bold & clear, in fine condition. Provenance includes auction record and a letter from the original recipient with envelope: “This note is to verify a gift I gave to Donna Holland roughly twenty five years ago as a Christmas present. It was a retrospective book of Salvador Dali’s work with an original sketch in it. It also was autographed. Dory Coffeee. April 10 1991”.
First Edition, stated. Fine-looking, structurally sound hardcover, little discernible wear, bright interior, unmarked. Bound in blue cloth with artist’s facsimile signature to front cover in white, white lettering to spine. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn but faintly foxed in front, protected by a plastic coat, price-clipped. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. [4], 5-15, i-xv pp. then follows an extensive range of 34 full-color reproductions of Dali’s early works, and another 120 in black-and-white, printed on high-gloss paper. Helpfully includes Introductory notes by Theodore Rousseau, F.J. Sanchez-Canton and Carl J. Weinhardt, Jr., and an artist’s statement, too, prepared specially for the exhibition, held at the Gallery of Modern Art, New York City, from Dec. 18, 1965 to Feb. 28, 1966. 123pp. SIGNED COPY with an ORIGINAL DRAWING by the famed Spanish Surrealist.
