The title page depicts two angels spearing and lighting a sacred heart with the caption, ” Opusenlum Containing Frontis Emblems Composed by John Davis Anno Dni 1648″ in captivating pen and ink detail. 19 “Emblems” follow, each one containing stanzas of manuscript poetry and a separate intricately detailed pen and ink drawing. Each of the 18 original pieces of artwork are beautifully executed and remain in exceptional condition. The book is bound in a stiff vellum with gilt along the board edges , the spine with six compartments and title “DAVIS EMBLEMS”. In overall wonderful condition considering its age with marbled end pages and some minor expert repair throughout.
