RARE SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MAGICIANS MEMBERSHIP CARD SIGNED BY HARRY HOUDINI
Extremely desirable Society of American Magicians membership card number 833 issued to W. M. Marr dated 1924, 4 x 2.5, boldly signed at the bottom in fountain pen by Harry Houdini as president, and countersigned by Richard Van Dien as secretary. In fine to very fine condition. Founded on May 10, 1902, in the back room of Martinka’s magic shop in New York, the Society of American Magicians expanded under the leadership of Harry Houdini during his term as National President from 1917-1926.
Born Erich Weiss on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary, Harry Houdini moved with his family to Appleton, Wisconsin at age four. There, his father became the first rabbi in town. At thirteen, Houdini and his family moved to New York City, where his interest in magic grew. Fascinated by conjuring of all kinds, especially that of the great 19th century French magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, Ehrich later took the name Harry Houdini. While Houdini took his stage name from the name of the French magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, he later wrote our book, The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin, a debunking study of Houdin’s abilities.
