FIRST EDITION, Third Printing. “Copyright 1949” is the only date stated on the copyright page, and there is the letter code “A-Z” at the bottom of the copyright page. Though Harper & Brothers usually stated “First Edition” in its books at this time, this was one of the exceptions; i.e. it did not state “first edition” but instead simply used its letter code for identification. It is presumed that the code “D-Y” (April 1949) was the first printing, with a second 1949 printing being lettered “K-Y” (November 1949). This “A-Z” (January, 1950) is the third printing. Hardcover, 5.5″ x 8.5″, 276 pages. Original NAVY BLUE CLOTH COVERED BOARDS with GILT TITLING TO THE SPINE. and Harper & Brothers blind stamped colophon on the front cover. This is the same binding as the First Printing (later printings had different bindings).
