ERNEST HEMINGWAY SIGNS A FIRST EDITION OF HIS NOVEL, ACROSS THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE TREES
An absolutely gorgeous signed first edition of ACROSS THE RIVER AND INTO THE TREES. LONDON: JONATHAN CAPE, 1950. 8vo. Original green cloth stamped in red. Original Hans Tisdall illustrated dust jacket.
First Edition, First Printing with the words “First Published 1950” printed on the copyright page. Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway on the title page, “To Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Williams, wishing them all good things always. Very Sincerely, Ernest Hemingway, Gritti Hotel, Venize. 28/4/54”
The original First Issue dustjacket has extremely minor wear to the head and base of the spine and is in remarkable condition. Also of importance: note the dust jacket has a spelling error “deeps” instead of “depths” in the final sentence of the 2nd. para. confirming this is a first edition. The book, 254 pp., 8vo., is in excellent condition. The binding is tight, with no cocking or leaning and the boards are crisp with only minor wear. A great copy of this TRUE FIRST EDITION that precedes the American edition by 3 days. This is the only signed first edition of this title we have encountered.
The person to whom this book is inscribed, Charles F. Williams, was Chairman of the Board of the Western & Southern Life Insurance Co., owner of the Queen City Club and a widely known philanthropist.
